Congratulations to Professor Gan Wee Teck

Congratulations to Professor Gan Wee Teck for being appointed as Head of the Department of Mathematics from 1 July 2023.

Prof Gan undertook his undergraduate studies at Cambridge University, followed by graduate studies at Harvard University, obtaining his Ph.D. in 1998.  He was an Assistant Professor at Princeton University from 2001 to 2003 and moved to the University of California San Diego in 2003 where he was subsequently promoted to full Professor in 2009.  He joined NUS in 2010 and was appointed Provost’s Chair Professor from 2013 to 2016, Distinguished Professor from 2016 to 2022, and Tan Chin Tuan Centennial Professor in 2022.  

Prof Gan is known for his work on automorphic forms and representation theory in the context of the Langlands program, especially the theory of theta correspondence, the Gan–Gross–Prasad conjecture, and the Langlands program for Brylinski–Deligne covering groups.  He has received many recognitions for his research achievements, both internationally and locally, including (i) the American Mathematical Society Centennial Fellowship, 2002, (ii) Sloan Research Fellowship, 2003-2005, (iii) being invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians 2014, (iv) Outstanding Researcher Award, NUS, 2015 and (v) President’s Science Award 2017, Singapore.
