Classes & Exams

• • In general, each math course consists of three hours’ of lectures and one hour of tutorial every week. But some courses that are taught in flipped classroom modes may have shorter lecture but longer tutorial hours.
  • Lectures are usually scheduled in two 2-hour blocks per week although they are not taught to the full hour (to allow time for students to move between classes). Tutorials are scheduled separately.
  • Level 5000 and higher courses are usually small in enrolment and more interactive in nature, so there are usually no separate tutorial classes outside the four scheduled lecture hours. Some higher level courses are originally structured to have only a three-hour lecture (no tutorial) every week.
  • A limited number of courses may be scheduled in one 3-hour block in the day or evenings and taught only once a week. Some of these may still have separate tutorials.
  • All lectures begin in Week 1 of a semester*. Note that in Semester 1 there is an Orientation Week (Week 0) with no classes held.
  • Tutorials and lab sessions for math courses usually begin in Week 3 of a semester*, although some lab sessions may be held once in two weeks/in specific weeks.
  • Changes in class timetables are disallowed as revisions may affect many other students. Students are also responsible in ensuring that they do not read courses with clashing class timetables.
  • Due to various constraints in scheduling evening classes, part-time graduate students may have to make their own arrangements to attend day-time classes if necessary.

*MA1511, MA1512 and MA1513 are 2 unit courses that are taught for half a semester. These courses are only offered to students from the Faculty of Engineering. MA1508E is a 4unit course but also offered exclusively to students from the Faculty of Engineering.

• • Examinations are held on campus with standard start times:

• • Exam duration for maths courses:
    • • 2 hours for levels 1000 to 3000 (1.5 hours for 2 units courses;
      • 2.5 hours for levels 4000 to 5000.
  • FMS, level 6000 and selected courses do not have final written exams. Final assessment for these courses would be in other formats, e.g. assignment, project, presentation.
  • Exams for 2 units courses taught in the first half of a semester will take place in Week 8 of that semester.
  • Students who are working must be prepared to take leave from work to sit for examinations that take place during their working hours.
  • Changes in examination timetables are disallowed as revisions may affect many other students. Students are also responsible in ensuring that they do not read courses with clashing examination timetables.
