Centre for Data Science and Machine Learning

Rapid advances in social media, online business, internet of things, and computing power have led to a massive explosion of data in our daily life. The volume and varied formats of the available data present unprecedented challenges to existing sciences and technologies in terms of processing and interpretation. The usefulness of this resource for human knowledge is determined by its accessibility and analytics. To respond to the current data revolution, the Centre for Data Science and Machine Learning (CDSML) is formed through restructuring its predecessor (the Centre for Wavelets, Approximation and Information Processing). CDSML is a faculty level centre hosted by the Department of Mathematics. The main objective of the centre is to facilitate research and education through organizing and supporting activities in data science and machine learning.

The Centre for Data Science and Machine Learning emphasizes the synergy of mathematics, statistics and computer science in the domains of data science and machine learning, as well as artificial intelligence. Members of the centre have been conducting research in the theoretical foundations of data science and machine learning and applying state-of-the-art machine learning techniques such as deep learning  to solve real-world data analytic problems, including optimizing portfolio construction and monitoring financial market movements, image processing and interpretation, computer vision and  data science/AI in healthcare. 

To nurture the next generation of leaders in data science, the Centre has been actively supporting the educational goals of the University through training research  graduate students and offering the Master of Science in Data Science and Machine Learning (DSML) programme.  In particular, the centre serves as a platform to coordinate the administration and educational activities of the DSML programme.  It also offers consulting services in data science analytics to enterprises and government agencies.
