Prospective PhD Students

Successful applicants are admitted into the Graduate Programme, leading to a PhD degree.

  1. Applicants must have at least an Honours degree or its equivalent from a reputable university. Applicants are evaluated by several criteria including their academic records, reference letters and research experiences.
  2. TOEFL/IELTS & GRE are required of all foreign applicants whose national language or medium of teaching is not English, including those already working in Singapore. A minimum TOEFL score of 85 is required for the internet-based test (with a minimum of 22 for the writing section), while a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 is required. For GRE, applicants must attain an aggregate score of 320 and above for Quantitative & Verbal Reasoning and a 3.5 for Analytical Writing. 
  3. Applicants whose Bachelor degree(s) are not from NUS, NTU, SMU or SUTD must take the GRE (Graduate Record Examinations) .Exceptionally strong candidates not from the stated universities can be considered for GRE waiver, subjected to department’s approval.
  4. Applicants should sit for the above test/s early, bearing in mind that there may be specific test dates, and the test result/s may take some time to reach you.

  • Candidates admitted on scholarships are given the award for the first year. A scholarship is renewable annually up to a maximum of 4 years for PhD candidates, subject to satisfactory progress. A scholarship may be suspended or terminated at any time if the candidate’s performance is not satisfactory. 

Duration of candidature is the same for both full-time and part-time studies. Typically, PhD studies may be completed from a minimum of 2 years to a maximum of 5 years.

  1. Application for admission to PhD is done through the Graduate Admission System. Applicants are advised to browse through the user guide to better equip themselves before commencing your application.
  2. All supporting documents must be uploaded (in pdf format) by the application closing date. English translations should accompany supporting documents that are not in English. No changes are allowed once the application is submitted successfully.
  3. Application for scholarship is self-contained in the application package. More information are available at the NUS Graduate School.
  4. Applications and/or payment received after the closing dates will not be processed for that intake. Incomplete applications will also not be processed.
  5. Applicants are not required to mail us hardcopies of the supporting documents.

  • Singapore NRIC (for Singapore Citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents)
  • Employment Pass (if applicable)
  • Passport information page (for International applicants)
  • University transcript
  • Degree certificate/ a letter stating your full-time student status.
  • Valid TOEFL/IELTS score
  • At least two (2) Academic Referees’ recommendation letter
  • Publications or abstract (optional)
  • Personal statement(optional)
  • Financial document eg. bank statement / recent pay slip / original sponsor’s letter (applicable for self-financing applicants)
  • GRE Scoresheet (for required applicants)

 

APPLICATION OUTCOMES

  • August intake: early June
  • January intake: early November of the previous year

 

APPLICATION DEADLINE

  • 15 November of the previous year, for consideration of admission in the August term (Semester 1) of the following year.
  • 15 May of the previous year, for consideration of admission in the January term (Semester 2) of the following year.

 

IMPORTANT NOTES:

The University has not engaged any external agencies to undertake graduate student recruitment on its behalf.  Candidates interested in our graduate programmes are advised to apply directly to the University and not through any agents.  Candidates who apply through agents will not have any added advantage in gaining admission.

We regret that we do not acknowledge receipt of applications, and are unable to answer queries related to the status of applications and the chances of admission. This is to ensure that all applications are processed promptly.

When should i submit my application?

You may submit your application as long as the online system is open but before the application deadline of respective term. All supporting documents must be uploaded online before the closing date and application fee paid promptly. Late payment and applications will not be processed.

When will my application be reviewed?

All applications are reviewed and considered by a committee only after the closing date. We are unable to review qualifications before the closing date, nor advise on whether you would be a suitable applicant or the chances of admission.

How do i apply for scholarship and what does it cover?

The scholarship application is self-contained in the application package. Scholarships are limited and application is on competitive basis. You are strongly encouraged to also look to other sources of funding for e.g. A*STAR. Coverage by scholarship differs from one another. Must i sit for TOEFL/IELTS and/or GRE tests?

TOEFL/IELTS ascertains a candidate’s English language proficiency and is necessary if English is not your native tongue the medium of university instruction is not completely in English. Alternatively, applicants should supply a documentary proof that the medium of instruction for their first degree was conducted 100% in English. Applicants Applicants (except NUS graduates) applying for disciplines in the Faculty of Science should preferably submit GRE scores.
