International Awards

Professor Lim Lek-Heng (BSc. Honors, class of 1996) has been awarded the 2017 James H. Wilkinson Prize in Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing and the 2017 Stephen Smale Prize of the Society for the Foundations of Computational Mathematics.

Mr Dong Bin (M.Sc, class of 2005) was awarded the Silver prize of the New World Mathematics Award for his Master Thesis at the Fourth International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians (ICCM2007).

Dr Li Xudong (PhD 2015, jointly supervised by Toh Kim Chuan and Sun Defeng) has been awarded the Best Paper Prize for Young Researchers in Continuous Optimization at the 2019 International Conference on Continuous Optimization in Berlin.  He had submitted the following paper for the competition: X.D. Li, D.F. Sun, and K.C. Toh, A highly efficient semismooth Netwon augmented Lagrangian method for solving Lasso problems, SIAM J. Optimization, 28 (2018), pp. 433–458.

National Awards

The nation’s highest accolade for youth, the Singapore Youth Award (SYA) honours exceptional young people who enrich the hearts and souls of the community and bring distinction to the nation.

Our alumnus Dr YEO Sze Ling was a recipient of the Singapore Youth Award 2012. Dr Yeo graduated from NUS with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics in 2001 and completed her PhD in 2006.

NUS Alumni Awards

Celebrating excellence, the NUS Alumni Awards are the pinnacle of alumni recognition by the University. Through the Awards, which were launched in the NUS Centennial Year in 2005, the University recognises alumni who have made significant contributions to their alma mater, society, and the world.

NUS Distinguished Alumni Award  

Emeritus Prof Louis CHEN, Founding Director of NUS’ Institute for Mathematical Sciences (IMS) was conferred the NUS Distinguished Alumni Service Award 2017 for his service to NUS and contributions to the advancement of science. He built up IMS into one of the finest institutes in the world. His research on the Chen-Stein method has grown into one of the most important areas of discrete probability.   During his 43 years with the University, Prof Chen was Head of the Department of Mathematics (July 1996-June 2000) and Head of the Department of Statistics and Applied Probability (July 2002-June 2004). In July 2000, he became the founding Director of IMS, where he served for 12½ years

Science Alumni Awards

The Faculty of Science established the Distinguished Science Alumni Awards in 1999 in conjunction with the Faculty’s 70th Anniversary in recognition of alumni who have distinguished themselves in national leadership, service, research excellence or betterment and promotion of Science.

In line with the growth and influence of the Faculty and its many and wide ranging disciplines the Faculty decided to also establish the Outstanding Science Alumni Awards with its celebration of the University’s Centennial.

Our department’s alumni have received the Distinguished and Outstanding Science Alumni Awards from 2004 to present.
