The learning journey was no doubt a fruitful session for me and my peers, as we have gained insights into the real-world applications of Mathematics. I never knew that Mathematics could be applied into the creation of movie animations in interactive digital media. The talks were also very enriching into giving us a clearer picture of how Mathematics could be applied to finance. Lastly, the hands-on session on Maple was an eye-opening experience for all of us. Even though it was quite complex initially, we slowly familiarized ourselves and were able to solve mathematical problems with the help of the software. All in all, the learning journey has given me a clearer idea on the applications of Mathematics and exposed me to more opportunities which the department can offer.

It was an enriching learning journey and I learnt a lot about how math can be used in our daily lives. This has allowed me to better understand the usage of math in both our daily lives and also in various industries. The session on MAPLE was really interesting and fun although I found it a little complicated at the start. This meaningful experience has allowed me to be able to make a more affirmed choice on whether I’ll take Mathematics in University and even which course. I would really encourage students who are unsure of what further studies they would wish to pursue in University to participate in this learning journey.

I have always thought that even when one moves on to the university level, the math faculty will still be about solving lots of tricky math questions and learning more topics. After going for the math tour, I realized that there are so many areas one can go into, be it finance or computational math. Through the talks by a few professors, I learnt and found out how math can be applied to our daily lives and in our future job sectors if we go into the finance sector.
Lastly, the hands-on computer session was also quite fun and made me realize that we can actually use technology to work out math problems. Overall, this math tour has indeed opened my eyes to the limitless possibilities of math and helped me have a better understanding of university life and the lessons I’ll have to go through if I have to choose math as my university course in future.

Interacting with students in Math society give me insights into life as a Math major student and lecturers were informative.
It is a very fun experience and if given another chance, I would still sign up for it.
This event is indeed enriching and worth going for.
This programme is useful as it allows me to have a better understanding of Mathematics at university level.
Students from Meridian Junior College
The talks were interesting and informative, the tea break was sumptuous and the hands-on session on Maple was very useful. I hope to make this visit a yearly affair as part of our college’s H3 programme, as H3 Mathematics students are the most likely candidates to take up the mathematics course.

Senior Teacher, Nanyang Junior College
The NUS visit was very fruitful. The modules helmed by the various lecturers gave me a better understanding of the complexity of mathematics in university. Although the program was short, it gave newcomers a sneak peek into the course. Another highlight was the tour with current students. They shared their stories and how they used the facilities to enhance their learning. After this learning journey, I am resolved to take up mathematics in university.”

Student, Pioneer Junior College
The Faculty tour and discussions with senior students provided in-depth knowledge on what mathematics is about, an understanding of the distinction between pure and applied mathematics, as well as the career prospects. The hands-on practice for the Maple software was eye-opening and enriching. The learning journey prepares us ahead as we stepped into certain parts of the university content that we can learn in the future.”
