Other Outreach Activities

Faculty members of the Department play an active and substantial role in the Singapore Mathematical Society. Outreach activities are organised for the promotion of mathematics education among schools and junior colleges. These include lectures at schools and junior colleges, enrichment programmes for primary and secondary school students, workshops for secondary school and junior college teachers, as well as mathematics competitions, namely Singapore Mathematical Olympiad (Junior, Senior and Open Sections), Singapore Secondary School Mathematical Olympiad (Junior and Senior Sections), and Singapore Mathematics Project Festival (Junior and Senior Sections).

The Department of Mathematics held its inaugural Data Science and Analytics Day on 15 March 2017.  Targeted at pre-university students and the general public, the Department hoped to share more about data science and its applications in our daily lives.
For students interested to pursue studies in data science, the Department* offers a four-year direct Honours programme, designed with sufficient technical depth to equip graduates with the ability to develop novel analytical tools for new scientific applications and industry problems that will emerge in future. (*The programme is offered by the Departments of Mathematics and Statistics & Applied Probability in the Faculty of Science, in conjunction with the School of Computing.)

This event was held consecutively for 3 years from 2017 to 2019.

Faculty members of the Department help the Ministry of Education to train the Singapore team for the International Mathematical Olympiad.

The Mathematics Enrichment Camp (held from 2005 to 2018) provided a platform for students to learn more about Mathematics and its applications beyond the realm of textbook mathematics.  Information on past years’ camps is available here

This has been discontinued from 2019. If you are interested in such events, please check out our Learning Journey

As its commitment to mathematics education of the nation, the Department is very active in providing mathematics enrichment talks to the schools in Singapore. A large number of talks on various topics of interest have been delivered at many different schools.

The Department organises public lectures to promote mathematics education and awareness of its usefulness. These are presented by faculty members of the Department as well as international experts. Public lectures by the latter are jointly organised with the Institute for Mathematical Sciences (IMS).

Faculty members also propose and supervise projects under special programmes of the Ministry of Education. These programmes include the Science Research Programme for junior college students, the Science Mentorship Programme for secondary school students, and the Science Training-In-Action (SCIENTIA) Programme for NUS High School of Mathematics and Science.
