This programme is only offered to students who are admitted in AY2020/2021 and earlier. It is an open programme and students who wish to pursue it may declare via APAD in EduRec (latest) before the start of the fifth semester of study in NUS.
It is the students’ responsibility to strategize and plan to complete the programme requirements by the time they are due to graduate.
Students who are admitted in AY2018/2019 or earlier, and reading one of the following Primary or Second Majors are not allowed to read a Minor in Financial Mathematics:
- Primary Major in Mathematics
- Primary Major in Applied Mathematics
- Primary Major in Quantitative Finance
- Primary Major in Data Science & Analytics
- Second Major in Mathematics
- Second Major in Financial Mathematics
- Second Major in Data Analytics
Students who are admitted from AY2019/2020 to AY2020/2021, and reading one of the following Primary or Second Majors are not allowed to read a Minor in Mathematics:
- Primary Major in Mathematics
- Primary Major in Applied Mathematics
- Primary Major in Quantitative Finance
- Primary Major in Statistics
- Primary Major in Data Science & Analytics
- Second Major in Mathematics
Programme Requirements
Students will follow the requirements that correspond to their year of admission.
Cohorts AY2012/2013 to AY2018/2019

To be awarded a Minor in Financial Mathematics, a student must pass at least 24 Units from non-overlapping courses of the following type:

- At least 8 units from MA1xxx (except MA1301/MA1301X) and CS1231/CS1231S; and
- MA2216/ST2131 or ST2334; and
- MA3269 and (QF3101 [for non-BIZ students] or FIN3102 [for BIZ students] or FIN3702 [for BIZ students]); and ST3131.
Students are reminded to work out a feasible study plan for the 6 courses in this minor requirement. In particular, they need to ensure that they have sufficient number of semesters left in the candidature to complete the courses, as no co-reading of follow-up courses will be allowed. Also note that both MA3269 and MA4269 are only offered in semester 1 of each academic year.
Note that courses with dummy code MAx99x cannot be used to fulfil the requirements of this Minor.

- MA3269 or QF2104; and
- QF3101 [for non-BIZ students] or FIN3102 [for BIZ students] or FIN3702 [for BIZ students]).

FAQ
Am I allowed to use some of the modules in the Minor to fulfil my Major or Faculty requirements or ULR?
Yes, but note that the MCs may only be counted once, and you are not allowed to use more than 1/3 of the common modules (i.e. not more than 2 common modules) to satisfy both your Major and Minor requirements. This applies to Science and non-Science Major students.
Am I allowed to use other modules to replace those listed in the Minor requirements if I have problems reading the required modules?
No. This is because it is a specialized field. If your Major requirement has more than 1/3 overlap with this Minor and the overlapping modules are core modules in your Major, you will not be able to complete this Minor.
Note that modules listed as preclusions are not necessarily good for replacing or substituting the modules that they are precluded from.
Are non-Business students allowed to read FNA3102/FIN3702 instead of QF3101 to fulfil Minor in Financial Mathematics?
No. They must read QF3101.
I’d like to read a Major in Statistics with Minor in Financial Mathematics. What are the common modules that I can use to fulfil both sets of requirements?
- You may only use these three modules to count towards both major and minor requirements: MA1102R, MA2216/ST2131 and ST3131; and
- You are not allowed to use modules other than those listed above to count towards the graduation requirements of both Major and Minor; and
- You must read the additional module MA4269.
Note that students who are admitted in AY2019/2020 and AY2020/2021 are not allowed to read Minor in Financial Mathematics with Major in Statistics.
Can I read minor in Mathematics with minor in Financial Mathematics?
Yes, but no module may be double counted towards both sets of graduation requirements, i.e. you must read 12 modules in total in order to fulfil the graduation requirement for both minor programmes.
