Internship Opportunities

Internship Opportunities

Internships can provide valuable work experience for students while pursuing their undergraduate studies. Mathematics and Quantitative Finance majors are encouraged to proactively source for holiday internships to enhance their learning experience, which would be useful when they join the workforce.

Apart from sourcing for their own internships, students may also tap on existing resources such as holiday internship handled by the NUS Centre for Future-ready Graduate and the Undergraduate Professional Internship Programme (UPIP) managed by the Faculty of Science.

Employers who have partnered the Faculty of Science in offering UPIP to students from the Department include:

    • AXA Life Invest
    • AXIS Specialty Limited
    • Bank Of America Merrill Lynch
    • BTG Pactual
    • Citibank Singapore Limited
    • Credit Suisse
    • DBS Bank HK Ltd
    • Great Eastern Financial Advisors Private Limited
    • Great Eastern Life Assurance Co Ltd
    • J.P. Morgan Private Bank
    • Jacob Ng and Associates
    • Ministry of Defence
    • Munich Management Pte Ltd
    • NUS – Risk Management Institute
    • OCBC Bank
    • Pickering Pacific Pte Ltd
    • PowerMe Pte.Ltd

(List is non-exhaustive)

Occasionally, some other employers may offer specific positions for holiday internship directly through the Department. Such information is usually circulated to existing students via email.

The simplified UPIP workflow below serves as a quick reference for students and academic advisors:

Before starting UPIP:

  1. Student seeks academic advisor to discuss intention and direction for UPIP;
  2. Academic advisor gives advice and support, where applicable;
  3. If UPIP is supported, student submits application online;
  4. Academic advisor accepts the application online.

After UPIP has started/ is in progress:

  1. Student starts UPIP. During the first week of internship, student discusses workplan with work supervisor;
  2. Student submits the workplan;
  3. Academic advisor approves the workplan;
  4. Student submits (via TalentConnect) weekly online reports;
  5. Academic advisor reviews the reports (at his/her discretion). For semester-long UPIP, student submits an online mid-term report on top of weekly reports.

At the end of UPIP:

  1. Student submits the final paper report to the academic advisor/mentor;
  2. Academic advisor is required to review weekly journals, final report and supervisor evaluation before concluding the UPIP online;
  3. For more details, refer to UPIP for students (link remains).

For employers who are keen to offer internships:

  1. For an internship to be offered as UPIP, at must last for at least 10 weeks (for special semester) or 18 weeks (for regular semester) as students would receive academic units upon completion.
  2. Internships that are shorter than 10 weeks may still be offered as holiday internships through the NUS Centre for Future-ready Graduates. No academic units are given for completing holiday internships but they are equally important in enhancing students’ learning experience.
  3. The Department and Faculty do not collate or screen applications. Students will send their applications directly to the employer’s contact person.
  4. Employers will be required to complete some paperwork before the position may be opened for application. Please refer to UPIP for employers (link remains) for more details.

The Academic Advisor for UPIP would be the student’s designated Academic Mentor from the Department. The Academic Advisor will approve your work plan, and read your weekly journals and final report. He/she will eventually decide if your performance in the internship is satisfactory or unsatisfactory.

The role of the Department’s UPIP coordinator is to assess the suitability of internships for students reading major in Mathematics/Applied Mathematics/Quantitative Finance.

There is no coordinator for holiday internships. Students and employers who are interested in those offered through the NUS Centre for Future-ready Graduate may visit the Centre’s website for more details and application procedure.
